The Art of Keeping the Language Alive
Alien Weaponry: Kua Tupu Te Ara dir. Kent Belcher

Panel Discussion part of the Aotearoa Film Focus Weekend. Free entry.

Focused on celebrating the preservation of indigenous languages through the use of music, theatre and film. Two bands on opposite sides of the globe use music to encourage the preservation of their own respective languages, with a heavy focus on youth involvement, in Alien Weaponry: Kua Tupu Te Ara and Kneecap. Unofficial national Māori theatre company Taki Rua Theatre have been utilising te reo Māori in their performances for decades, and Katie Wolfe’s, The Haka Party Incident toured the country as a stage play celebrating Māori and Pasifika activism before being reconfigured into a documentary. All four films will act as a lift-off point for a conversation dissecting the importance of art as a medium to preserve language.
